Adventures in Books… The Traitor Queen

“Events are building to a climax in Sachaka as Lorkin returns from his exile with the Traitor rebels. The Traitor Queen has given Lorkin the huge task of brokering an alliance between his people and the Traitors. Lorkin has also had to become a feared black magician in order to harness the power of an entirely new kind of gemstone magic. This knowledge could transform the Guild of Magicians – or make Lorkin an outcast forever.”

Finally Finished this book after months and months! I started this book at the end of 2012 I think on my Kindle and it has taken me this long to finish it. Once I started commuting and listening to audiobooks I just lost touch with actual reading for a quite a while. Then last month I started to make myself read before bed a few nights a week and I finally finished a few books in the last week or so.

First up is the final book in the Traitor Spy trilogy. I enjoyed the book and the trilogy as this was another series following on form another trilogy I loved – The Black Magician trilogy. It follows the same character Sonea and now her son, set about 20 years after the original story. There are also some other characters from the original that it was nice to see again.

I like books where I already know the characters, but I sometimes find the follow up books a little disappointing. I think that was the case for this book. It was more of an anticlimax than I expected so I was a little disappointed. To me there seemed to be less adventure in this books, even though the premise takes it forward into unknown territory. There was just something missing for me. Maybe because Sonea was older and that made me feel old. Maybe I just didn’t feel as connected to Lorkin as I would have liked to. I was not keen on Lorkin’s love interest as I was with Sonea in the original story.

I still enjoyed the the book though. I do like to see the stories through to the end. I love how Trudi Canavan writes. She gives lots of details as the story unfolds. I love being able to imagine the world she has created for the reader. I love that her style allows for me to vividly create the world in my head as I read. That is what I love about reading most of all – allowing my imagination to run free and create new worlds in my head.

I look forward to delving into the next world Trudi Canavan creates!
