Adventures in Books… Fifty Shades of Grey

And 50 Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

So yes I got sucked in!

I’ve written this post as I’ve finished each book as I thought that would be easier.

“When literature student Anastasia Steele interviews successful entrepreneur Christian Grey, she finds him very attractive and deeply intimidating. Convinced that their meeting went badly, she tries to put him out of her mind – until he turns up at the store where she works part-time, and invites her out.Unworldly and innocent, Ana is shocked to find she wants this man. And, when he warns her to keep her distance, it only makes her want him more. But Grey is tormented by inner demons, and consumed by the need to control. As they embark on a passionate love affair, Ana discovers more about her own desires, as well as the dark secrets Grey keeps hidden away from public view …”

So Fifty Shades of Grey. I liked it, there were definitely a few or more unnecessary parts, but there was some character development, which is what I liked. Learning about Christen and his past intrigued me and that got me to get the 2nd book more than anything else. I am very glad I did not read this in public at any time as I sure I was blushing a lot. It was a quick and easy read – 2 evenings!

“Daunted by the dark secrets of the tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Ana Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a US publishing house. But desire for Grey still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, she cannot resist. Soon she is learning more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven and demanding Fifty Shades than she ever thought possible. But while Grey wrestles with his inner demons, Ana must make the most important decision of her life. And it’s a decision she can only make on her own …”

Okay so things started to annoy me in the second book. Using the words baby and goddess and my sex got over the top. It also surprised me where the book went. From all the the things I had heard it is no where as bad as thought it was going to be sex wise. I really thought it was going to be all about fetishes, but it’s not which makes it easier to read. It also felt like the reader is getting bombarded with sex. I started to think why can’t they just sit and talk and not argue and it not lead to sex all the time! I do like how the story has developed even if it has been only a few weeks since they met and there is already a marriage proposal. I have to remind myself it’s just a book and it’s based on Twilight, which was another book where the more I thought about it the more it annoyed me.

“When Ana Steele first encountered the driven, damaged entrepreneur Christian Grey, it sparked a sensual affair that changed both their lives irrevocably. Ana always knew that loving her Fifty Shades would not be easy, and being together poses challenges neither of them had anticipated. Ana must learn to share Grey’s opulent lifestyle without sacrificing her own integrity or independence; and Grey must overcome his compulsion to control and lay to rest the horrors that still haunt him. Now, finally together, they have love, passion, intimacy, wealth, and a world of infinite possibilities. But just when it seems that they really do have it all, tragedy and fate combine to make Ana’s worst nightmares come true …”

Okay so I finished all 3 books within a week. I got hooked, but I wouldn’t say I will be rushing to re-read them. The 3rd book brought together the story and finished it with a happy ending. It was fantasy and the ending made sure of that for me. Yes this was set in the modern world, so could in theory take place, unlike most fantasy books I read, but the unlikeness of it is obvious. Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy it, even though towards the end I become numb towards all the sex. I could understand at the beginning as it was going to play a major part in their relationship, but towards the end it just seems to be stuck in to fill a chapter.

So what did the bookclub think?

Only 3 of us had read it by the meeting last week and 2 of us had read all 3 so I wan’t the only one. No hated it and no one loved it. It was quick read. Me and Jen both said by the end we felt a bit numb towards all the sex.

We also laughed at how unrealistic it was. If the others get around to reading it I’ll update again, but I wanted to get this post out as it’s been sitting in my drafts for a month!
