“Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She’s quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn’t get out much – not because she’s not pretty – she’s a very cute bubbly blonde – or not interested in a social life. She really is . . . but Sookie’s got a bit of a disability. She can read minds. And that doesn’t make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill: he’s tall, he’s dark and he’s handsome – and Sookie can’t ‘hear’ a word he’s thinking. He’s exactly the type of guy she’s been waiting all her life for. But Bill has a disability of his own: he’s fussy about his food, he doesn’t like suntans and he’s never around during the day . . . Yep, Bill’s a vampire. Worse than that, he hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, with a reputation for trouble – of the murderous kind. And then one of Sookie’s colleagues at the bar is killed, and it’s beginning to look like Sookie might be the next victim . . .”
This was the bookclub book for September. I read it in 3 days!
I liked it, but it was sort of spoilt by me having already seen the TV series. It was very short and I felt you did not get to know the characters enough.
There was a mixed response from book club. The 3 of us who read the book and had watched the series kept comparing them and it wasn’t a good comparison. We definitely prefer the tv show!
The others who hadn’t seen the tv show, didn’t like the book. Sian said the characters were pretty rubbish and found Sookie really annoying.
I was caught up over the absence of Tara. I also didn’t like Bill in the book. I prefer him the show, but even then I don’t really like him. Eric is a more interesting character.
I think I’ll give another book from the series ago. I’m hoping it might be different from the show more than the first one was and therefore I would be able to see it on it’s own rather than comparing it to the show all the time!
The book club book is Before I Go To Sleep. One of Sian’s picks!
