Studying… Again

So I’ve mention studying in a few posts (here and here) over the last month and I am finally getting around to writing about it!

After thinking about what I like about my work I decided to look at where I can go from here. I have felt in a rut for the past year. I don’t feel I have been learning anything new and have just been plodding along through life with no idea of where I am going.

This suits me when travelling, but not in everyday life!

I sat down with my dad (he’s very practical and solution focused) and told him all the bits I like about my job and how I would like to see myself in the future. He suggested looking at accountancy (he’s an accountant so he’s not biased or anything!). I discovered accountancy is more than just numbers. It is what I do with carbon footprint data, but with financial data. Management accounting specifically is about using the information in the past to plan for the future. Basically exactly what I like doing at the moment with carbon footprints!

So I have started studying business and accounting. I am doing this through the Chartered Institute of Management Accounting (or CIMA). It’s annoying as even though I have completed two degrees, I still have to start at the very beginning. I was annoyed when I found this out.

Then I started on the first module!

There are five modules to gain a Certificate in Business and Accounting:

  • Fundamentals of Management Accounting
  • Fundamentals of Financial Accounting
  • Fundamentals of Business Mathematics
  • Fundamentals of Business Economics
  • Fundamentals of Ethics, Corporate Governance and Business Law

I’m starting with Financial Accounting as this is what is suggested. It’s harder than I thought it was going to be so far. I think it is partly as most of the jargon is completely new to me, or I use it in a different context (such as credit and debit). I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it. The good thing is that I am doing it through distance learning and therefore can book the exams for when I am ready.

My original plan was to get it done by the time I return from Canada, but I don’t think this is going to happen. I don’t want to put pressure on myself and risk not doing my best on the exams.

I am currently in a good position to do distance learning and will use the next year to get the certificate done. I do not know if I will continue on with full accountancy training after this, but I don’t have to make the decision yet 🙂

So it’s back to the books for me and you know what? I like it!
